Think back to the most meaningful moments you’ve experienced at Christmas. I’m willing to bet it wasn’t a bunch of people gathered around a fruitcake, which is what you may call your crazy uncle. It was probably something simple…that first Christmas away from family when your friends invited you into their lives… the Christmas morning you spent handing out hot meals and coats to the homeless. Maybe it was that time you left a gift basket on a needy family’s door…that Christmas you simplified it all and gave toward a good cause instead… The decorations, the food, the parties, the shopping, yes, all of those things are fun, but the real joy is found in presence. No, not presents. PRESENCE. With all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, it can be nearly impossible to slow down. Whatever it costs in slowing down, the blessing will be worth it as you seek to be truly present with others. What if this year you were to slow down and instead of focusing on what gift to give Aunt Sally, you focused on giving her your presence instead? Your presence will require your time…it may entail your talents… or it could mean your sharing your presence through sharing your financial treasures. Here’s the thing: as a follower of Jesus, when you share your presence in these ways, you are ultimately pointing your friends and family members to the greatest gift of all: the presence of God in Jesus — Immanuel!
